Use of Volunteers

[+/-] show/hide this post

At all of the events Peak Potentials uses a large amount of unpaid volunteers compared to staff. The volunteers are great people but I my opinion they are abused by Peak Potentials for their free labor. After speaking with a few of the volunteers the most common reason for volunteering was for the hope to someday become a paid core team member with the organization.

Peak Potentials uses the "Do whatever it takes" approach with volunteers to get them to do things like clean the toilets and then have them be presenters in the same day. After seeing this first hand I now understand why labor laws were put in place, too bad volunteers are not covered.

In the presentations, Peak Potentials markets their volunteer program to the audience so that they always have a fresh supply.

In my honest opinion there is something wrong with a PROFIT MAKING COMPANY using VOLUNTEERS to run their program.

You know, it really bothers me when people take such a negative view of everything. Ever consider that a lot of the volunteers are there becuase they found that the trainings impacted their lives, and want to help others? I have been a volunteer at a number of events, and would do so, without any benefits. Also, very few of the people volunteering are trying to become part of the Core Team, so whoever came up with that one jumped to a few conclusions. I guess it all comes down to what motivates you... me, it is giving of myself to others, and helping those who are ready transform their lives.

Volunteering for Peaks has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

I think the Volunteer program is a great opportunity for people who might not be able to afford the trainings but want to go and learn new things, maybe to better themselves, maybe to change their lives, could even bump into the right person that they needed to meet. You make the opportunity what you can. Some also volunteer because its the passion and they love to help others.
